Cleared for takeoff, we have heard it a thousand times before. Yet sometimes we can fall into the pit of complacency and not really “hear” what was said or sometimes even digest the information in front of us.
I have been making a clear effort to sharpen my focus on takeoff, after this is the most critical phase of flight. Often this is emphasized in our yearly visit to the simulator, but its always good to stay sharp and improve our skills.
Ask yourself:
- Did I repeat the takeoff clearance with the runway number?
- Was I issued a heading or am I flying a navigation route?
- Did I check the approach end of the runway for incoming traffic?
- Do I feel alert? We can all be tired, especially early morning departures.
- Am I ready? (focused)

I would add to your list:
Is the aircraft ready to take off? Flap and trim settings for that runway.
Is the other professional pilot in the flight deck ready for take off? mental and physical
Was the pre-take off check list completed?

Interesting, probably not a bad idea to tighten things up a bit.
